Senator Ben Bruce Explains Why He Commends Buhari On How He Handled Xenophobia

Senator Bruce

“Today, I want to commend Buhari for sticking to a diplomatic solution and not a dramatic one, and it is working. Government is too serious a place for drama.” – Ben Bruce

President Buhari

Former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ben Murray Bruce has showered commendations on President Muhammadu Buhari for the manner he handled the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Xenophobic attacks in South Africa

Speaking on his Common Sense video series on YouTube, the Senator said that many prominent Nigerians and institutions had allowed their emotions to run regarding the xenophobia issue, and called on President Buhari to Nationalize or De-license South African companies in Nigeria.

Mr Bruce further explained that Nigeria would have been on the losing end if the President heeded the call to Nationalize or De-license South African companies because the balance of trade between Nigeria and South Africa favors Nigeria to a ratio of 4:1. He gave the figures that while South Africa only exports goods worth $500m to Nigeria, Nigeria on the other hand exports goods and services worth $2b to South Africa. Hence, if the Nigerian Government made any wrong moves on South African companies and the South African Government retaliates, then Nigeria would be at loss.

Senator Bruce added that leadership is a serious business which involves a leader keeping his head up when the world loses theirs and that was precisely what President Buhari did. He commended the President for his restraint and maturity.

Don’t Call It Rape, They Are Lovers – NUT Chairman says of a teacher and a 12-year-old pregnant schoolgirl.

Adamawa NUT Chairman, Comrade Nathan

Comrade Rodney Nathan (pictured), The State chairman of NUT #Adamawa State chapter has condemned reports that a teacher raped a 12-year-old schoolgirl in Namtari.

Nathan said the claims made by Adamawa Police command, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (#NSCDC), were premature and not correct, as proper investigations were not carried out before going to the press. He revealed that the relationship between the teacher and the schoolgirl was consensual and known to the parents of the girl and the (Namtari) community at large.

He mentioned that at the time Mr Yusuf was arrested, the keys to his room were with the girl in question, which suggested that the duo were engaged in a mutual relationship.

Quoting Mr Nathan, “one cannot call a mutual relationship between a schoolgirl and her teacher who are mutually in love a rape case.”

He said from the report submitted by a panel of enquiry set up by NUT to investigate the matter, it became known that the teacher and schoolgirl had been lovers for at least six months. And to further buttress this point, the investigation committee’s report revealed that the schoolgirl “is carrying a six-month pregnancy, an indication that a long term relationship had existed between the teacher and the schoolgirl.”

The Chairman however said that he doesn’t condone any case of rape but he is convinced that this very case was not a rape case.

Our correspondents notes that a 12-year-old is supposed to be a minor and not qualified for any form of intimacy in a relationship.

Rochas To Appear In Court Over Inciting Comments Against The Government

The immediate past Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has been charged to a magistrate’s court in Owerri over an allegation of incitement.

The suit is brought by Governor Emeka Ihedioha-led administration who allege that Okorocha has been inciting his supporters to disobey the state government.

The administration has been at loggerhead with Senator Okorocha since its inception over how he handled the State affairs while he was in power. They have laid accusations on him bordering on corruption and abuse of office as well as orders the seizures of some of his properties and businesses in the State. In a particular incident, the Chairman of the Task force on Recovery of Government properties was beaten up when he led a group to take over one of Okorocha’s properties.

On this most recent development, the state’s attorney-general on behalf of the state government, in a
suit with reference number OW/MISC.79/2019, filed at the Owerri
district of the magistrate’s court, alleging that Okorocha made
seditious and inciting statements against the government, “even on air
using his radio station (Reach FM)”.

The attorney-general further alleged that Senator Okorocha, now spends
more time in Owerri, “cavorting with his retinue of well-armed thugs
and urchins referred to as ‘Ohaji Boys’ whom he employed to cause
trouble”.

The Imo government also claims that Ihedioha’s aide was beaten to a
pulp when he went to Okorocha’s Spibat residence to serve the former
governor court papers.

The case is fixed for October 8, 2019.

IPOB Can’t Attack Me Outside Nigeria Because I Supported Them – Nigige

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has said members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) cannot attack him outside Nigeria.

He made the comments in Obosi, Anambra State in response to the plans of the group to attack politicians from the South East once they step outside the country.

According to him, IPOB cannot attack him because he protected the group and their interests when he was the governor of Anambra State. He further stated that he didn’t know IPOB to be a violent group. The Minister further also added that equity favours the Igbos to become the next President of Nigeria so they need to come together and support President Buhari so that it will be easier for them to clinch the Presidency.

His words, “IPOB was registered by the late President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr Dozie Ikedife and other Igbo as a non-violent group. What is going on now in the group is not part of the work plan . I visited the United States of America recently, and I was welcomed by IPOB members.

“They knew I fed and protected them when I was in office as governor. I have said it several times that Biafra cannot be achieved the IPOB way. The Igbo should stop shouting marginalisation. They should stand up and assert themselves to be counted. Nigeria belongs to all of us.

“Equity favours the Igbo to produce the next president of the country, but they must work hard and position themselves for it. We should stop political sentiments. Politicians don’t give power based on sentiment and emotion. President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is favourable to an Igbo president. We must support him and associate with the APC. Nobody will give you president of Nigeria in your bedroom.”

Recall that weeks ago, Senator Ike Ekweramadu was seriously attacked in Germany by members of the IPOB group when he was invited to an Igbo function. This attack sparked the idea of reigning attacks on any South East politician found abroad.
