“Today, I want to commend Buhari for sticking to a diplomatic solution and not a dramatic one, and it is working. Government is too serious a place for drama.” – Ben Bruce
Former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ben Murray Bruce has showered commendations on President Muhammadu Buhari for the manner he handled the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Speaking on his Common Sense video series on YouTube, the Senator said that many prominent Nigerians and institutions had allowed their emotions to run regarding the xenophobia issue, and called on President Buhari to Nationalize or De-license South African companies in Nigeria.
Mr Bruce further explained that Nigeria would have been on the losing end if the President heeded the call to Nationalize or De-license South African companies because the balance of trade between Nigeria and South Africa favors Nigeria to a ratio of 4:1. He gave the figures that while South Africa only exports goods worth $500m to Nigeria, Nigeria on the other hand exports goods and services worth $2b to South Africa. Hence, if the Nigerian Government made any wrong moves on South African companies and the South African Government retaliates, then Nigeria would be at loss.
Senator Bruce added that leadership is a serious business which involves a leader keeping his head up when the world loses theirs and that was precisely what President Buhari did. He commended the President for his restraint and maturity.
